The Nigerian Medical Association has said the association will mobilise all doctors in the state to embark on strike should Governor Rauf Aregbesola carry out the threat to sack the striking doctors in the state.
The Chairman of the NMA in Osun State, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi, who said this at a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday berated the state government for issuing a threat to sack doctors who he said were on strike because they had not been paid since June.
Ogunyemi said doctors in the state were not part of the agreements reached by labour unions with the state government on payment of half salaries to workers.
The doctors said they were unperturbed by the sack threat issued by the governor, saying they would not resume until the government reached an agreement with them that the balance of their salaries would be paid and when it would be paid.
Ogunyemi said the NMA had put all doctors within the state and outside on the alert and would not hesitate to shut down the health sector if the governor carried out his threat.
Doctors in state government owned hospitals have been on strike since Sepetember 28 over nonpayment of their salaries in full and refusal to remit deductions made from their salaries including contributory pensions deductions.
Other civil servants in the state have been receiving half salaries since the strike was called off in June but the doctors said although they were not averse to this, the government should make a commitment that they were being owed and when the balance would be paid.
He said, “The NMA has put all doctors in the state both in private public sectors on the red alert and the state government should not take our tolerance and endurance for weakness.
Ogunyemi said the state government had refused to remit contributory pension deductions made from doctors’ salaries to their pension fund administrators.
Debunking the claims that the doctors were on an illegal strike, Ogunyemi said the state government were served several notices and they had to resort to the industrial action because of the refusal of the government to listen to their demands.
