FIRST MASSIVE NATIONWIDE PROTESTS ON THE 5TH OF FEBRUARY, 2017

A call for good governance. A call for urgent explanation into the reckless economic downturn nationwide. A call for nationwide protests as we say No to the Executive, No to legislatures, No to judiciary... You have all failed us. We the people are tired. We can no longer continue with all of you. All your excuses and mistakes are not funny. We do not wish to continue with a system and government that is not working but afflicting the people. We the people of this country not living under the privileges of government allowances and remuneration have now accepted to take the bull by the horn to come out and protest this obnoxious and baseless policies and excuses of the government of the day. Where are the recovered looted funds? Why do we still have the executive arms and legislatures still enjoying their salaries and allowances while we hear there's no money to pay workers? Why do we still see ceaseless power failures with no explanation and hope of getting out of it unlike...

Chrome OS tablets with Android apps are coming soon

Get ready for Chrome OS to get a lot more pervasive and a lot more interesting this year, if only because it’s going to show up in new kinds of hardware. Google has been talking up the latest round of Chromebooks — the Samsung Chromebook Pro from CES and today’s new education-focused Chromebooks — but it’s also looking ahead to the next thing: tablets. Google’s Rajen Sheth, director of product for Android and Chrome for education and enterprise, held a conference call yesterday to talk about Chromebooks for the education market. But he also couldn’t help but note that these 2-in-1 form factors are just the start for Chrome OS. The Chromebook is going from being just a laptop to something that is a lot more versatile and dynamic ... such that OEMs can produce many great devices. We have put a lot of investment into the touch UI and making touch a great experience on the Chromebook. You're going to continue to see that happen. And what that's going to do i...

Google doubles down on Chromebooks in education with two new devices

Google is announcing two new Chromebooks specifically designed for the education market. Chrome OS has been strong in education for some time, outperforming the Mac, iPads, and Windows so much that by some estimates it represents half the market. The company is putting together a slew of Chrome OS-related announcements to try to solidify that lead, but at the center are two Chromebooks that are designed for students. The first is the Acer Chromebook Spin 11, essentially a convertible variant of the ruggedized Chromebook 11 N7. Internally, the specs are very little changed and unlikely to appeal to consumers — an 11.6-inch touchscreen, Intel Celeron processor, and a couple of storage and RAM options. Designed for the classroom, not the showroom What’s new is support for inexpensive Wacom styluses and what Google is calling a “World View Camera,” which is to say a camera that is designed to be used when the Chromebook is in tablet mode, and Google says students will ...

Asteroids is an interactive comedy with a fraught relationship to fiction

Asteroids , the second animated project from virtual reality studio Baobab, has lofty ambitions for a 10-minute short. It’s supposed to draw elements from both traditional animation and video games, put them in VR, and end up with something unprecedented: a piece of storytelling that, as Asteroids director (and Madagascar co-director) Eric Darnell describes it, lets us connect to fictional characters the way we would real human beings. It’s also supposed to be a funny cartoon about aliens in the style of classic Warner Bros. What’s the genre? Animated VR comedy with light interactive elements. What’s it about? A menial robot participates in wacky and heartwarming hijinks aboard a spaceship alongside two bumbling extraterrestrials their pet alien dog. Okay, what’s it really about? The power of friendship, and the player’s attempt to build a relationship with their shipmates. But is it...

Trump administration freezes EPA grants and contracts

The Trump administration has frozen grants and contracts by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to ProPublica . This could have big effects on the agency’s budget and severely undercut its efforts. In an email obtained by ProPublica , one EPA contractor writes that: “The new EPA administration has asked that all contract and grant awards be temporarily suspended, effective immediately. Until we receive further clarification, this includes task orders and work assignments.” For now, other details are still unclear. We don’t know whether the freeze affects all existing contracts — worth about $6.4 billion — or just new grants and contracts. The move is likely to be widely felt, though; in 2013, the EPA awarded $9.6 billion in grants and about $1.4 billion in contracts. Last year, the total budget was $8.6 billion, with the money for grants and contracts given to organizations at every level, from local nonprofits to state governments. Myron Ebell, who led Tru...

A Ghost Story has it all: romance, metaphysics, and Rooney Mara eating pie for five minutes

The first thing you will hear about A Ghost Story , director David Lowery’s indie follow-up to last year's Pete’s Dragon reboot, is that Rooney Mara spends five minutes comfort-eating a pie. Or maybe the unedited shot lasts 10 minutes. Or 15 or 20, depending on who in the audience you’re asking. Whatever the case, it feels interminable, like a test of the viewer’s indie film commitment, daring them to shift, clear their throat, uncomfortably laugh, or just grab their jacket and leave. But A Ghost Story , which premiered this week at Sundance, rewards patience. The “pie scene,” which feels initially like an act of cinematic self-indulgence, becomes a crucial point of reference, like a constant in a complex equation. A Ghost Story is a film about, among other things, the passage of time. How it slows and quickens; how it contains us. (Fair warning: light spoilers ahead.) Sundance Film Festival 2017...

Oscar nominations 2017: Moonlight and La La Land will go head-to-head at the Academy Awards

The nominees for the 89th annual Academy Awards are finally in. As if there was any doubt, Moonlight and La La Land, two of the biggest movies of 2016, will face off at the awards, as each raked in the most nominations across all categories. La La Land earned a record-tying 14 nominations, including a Best Picture nod and two for Best Original Song. That number ties it with Titanic and All About Eve for the most number of nominations for a single film. All things considered, it may well be La La Land’s night, but Moonlight, with its nine nominations, could still come away winning big at the show. This was a big year for the Oscars. After last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences made a significant push to foster and better recognize diversity in filmmaking. That effort shows in the nominations, which went to a number of actors and directors of color. Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Naomie Harris, Dev Patel, Ruth Negga, an...

Samsung says bad batteries and rushed manufacturing doomed the Galaxy Note 7

Samsung has finally released the results of the inquiry it commissioned into exactly what went wrong with the Galaxy Note 7, an acclaimed smartphone that had to be pulled from the market entirely last year after widespread reports of fires caused by the device. The company says there were two separate flaws with the Galaxy Note 7’s batteries. The first battery had a design flaw in the upper right corner that could cause a short circuit, according to Recode , while the second battery — used for replacement units — had a manufacturing issue that could lead to fires because of a welding defect. Some units of the second battery were also missing insulation tape. 700 dedicated staff tested 200,000 phones and 30,000 more batteries Samsung conducted an investigation with 700 dedicated staff testing 200,000 phones and 30,000 extra batteries, also commissioning three outside firms — UL, Exponent and TUV Rheinland — that ended up finding similar results. Last week The Wa...

More photos emerge of HTC and Under Armor’s smartwatch collaboration

Is a HTC smartwatch really coming this year? It looks like it. We first saw what appeared to be a prototype wearable in a company video all the way back in 2014, and last year, images leaked of an Android Wear device codenamed ‘Halfbeak’ — with a heart rate sensor on the underside and co-branding from fitness startup Under Armor. (The companies have had a not-quite-stable partnership for a few years.) Now, even more pictures of Halfbeak have appeared on Weibo:   There’s no new info to gleam from these images, but it’s worth noting that the watch is running a version of Android Wear 1.0 — odd when 2.0 is due out just next month. At any rate, if HTC is finally releasing Halfbeak, we can probably expect to hear more at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. The Verge will be there of course, so stay tuned for any forthcoming news.

The “nice guy” becomes a horror movie monster in Berlin Syndrome

There are plenty of horror movies featuring aliens, ghouls, and masked slashers, but I appreciate it most when the genre finds terror in the real world. So I was extremely curious to see Australian director Cate Shortland’s latest film, Berlin Syndrome — even more so after Netflix picked the movie up the week before Sundance even started. The film stars Teresa Palmer ( Lights Out ) as Clare, a young woman visiting Germany who crosses paths with an aw-shucks English teacher named Andi ( Sense8 ’s Max Riemelt). Andi, you see, is a nice guy , one of those fellas that seems charming and harmless, but who secretly holds some perverse ideas when it comes to emotional entitlement and what role consent plays in a relationship. After a brief romantic fling, Clare wakes up to realize that Andi’s locked her inside his apartment against her will, and so begins a terrifying battle for dominance and escape. WHAT’S THE GENRE? You could just call this a thriller, but if you want...

Netflix’s new sci-fi movie is Black Mirror meets Chicken Soup for the Soul

The Discovery has the premise of Black Mirror episode and the spiritual optimism of Chicken Soup for the Sci-Fi Nerd’s Soul. It's the not-so-distant future, and Dr. Thomas Harber (Robert Redford) has collected overwhelming scientific evidence that upon death our brainwaves make an exodus on a subatomic level. The “soul” leaves the body. Where consciousness goes, nobody knows, but the loose thread is enough to unravel humanity, inspiring an epidemic of suicides. When life is too painful, there's always the option to take the next train out of the station. (Heads up in advance: this review contains minor spoilers.) Two years and millions of suicides after the discovery, Dr. Harber’s estranged son Will (Jason Segel) returns home, hoping to convince dad to recant his findings and, in doing, so save the world from systematically offing itself. Will’s serendipitously joined by Isla (Rooney Mara), a suicidal curveball of a character prone to explicit descriptio...

New Movie Trailers : Logan, Power Rangers, and many more

Highly recommended for the weekend Logan Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine looks as action packed as you'd expect, but I certainly didn't expect it to look quite as personal and emotional as it seems to be hinting at in this trailer. It looks like the film is both a send-off to one generation and an introduction to the next. It's coming out March 3rd. Power Rangers Here's the first full-length trailer for the Power Rangers movie. It's clear this is going to be a pretty campy movie, the question now is whether the actors will have fun with that campiness or just come off looking silly. This trailer doesn't exactly leave me feeling encouraged. It comes out March 24th.     Deidra & Laney Rob a Train Deidra & Laney Rob a Train is headed to Sundance next week, but it's already been picked up by Netflix for a March 17th release. It's a comedy about a couple of teenagers who decide to start robbing trains, which i...

GM launches partnership with Girls Who Code

Mary Barra, the CEO and chairman of General Motors, believes that one way to build up more women leaders in the auto industry is to reach teenage girls who are interested in math and science. To that end, GM is investing in a new partnership with Girls Who Code, a nationwide after-school program that supports girls’ interest in STEM programs. Barra says the $250,000 grant is only the beginning to supporting the non-profit organization that provides free after-school program in schools, universities, and communities centers. Barra, the first woman to lead a car company and one of 22 women to run a Fortune 500 company, is not an executive who shies away from addressing the problem. She has called for a host of initiatives that GM participates in to encourage diverse hiring practices and to promote women up through the leadership ranks. But first qualified women have to apply for te...

The Women’s March movement is taking place on every continent, even Antarctica

Today, millions of women across the world are taking part in the Women’s March movement, to “send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights.” The marches are taking place in over 60 countries, spanning every continent — even Antarctica. Zunas shared a picture of the group on Twitter earlier this morning, who bore signs reading “Seals for Science”, “Save the Whales”, and “Cormorants for Climate”. As these signs suggest, this march is as much about preserving the environment as it is legal protections for women. In an interview with the UK’s Independent , organizer Linda Zunas, data analytics and market research professional from Oakland, California, noted that she set up the event after she “spent a month after the election mourning the impending damage to the earth that will be done.” Since the election of Donald Trump, environmentalists have worried about what his presidency will m...

The Big Sick is a hilarious, tearjerking rom-com starring Kumail Nanjiani

Kumail Nanjiani is arguably best known for his role as Dinesh Chugtai on HBO’s Silicon Valley , but I suspect regular readers of The Verge — folks fascinated with technology and the culture that unspools around it — probably know his work on Adventure Time , Bob’s Burgers , The X-Files , and The Indoor Kids . That last one isn’t a movie or television show, but a (now defunct) podcast Nanjiani hosted with his wife, the writer and producer Emily Gordon. The Big Sick is the pair's first foray into co-writing a screenplay, and in an unintentional way, a prequel to their podcast. It’s a romantic comedy about how Nanjiani and Gordon met, started dating, and overcame a life threatening illness. Ya know, the usual rom-com stuff. (Full disclosure: Years ago, my wife worked with Nanjiani and The Big Sick director Michael Showalter on the Comedy Central show Michael and Michael Have Issues .) What’s the genre? Romantic-dram-com. What’s it about? For people who beca...

You can now animate your VR drawings using Google’s new Tilt Brush Toolkit with Unity integration

People have made some pretty cool things in Google’s Tilt Brush VR painting app. But until now paintings made in Tilt Brush have pretty much been stuck in Tilt Brush, with no easy way to integrate those creations with other programs. That changes today with Google’s open-source release of Tilt Brush Toolkit , which includes Python scripts and a Unity SDK for exporting Tilt Brush projects. Google is specifically highlighting the Unity integration, allowing users to use Tilt Brush sketches in Unity itself with the same materials, shaders, and even the audio responses from the Tilt Brush app. Developers will be able to use those 3D paintings in games, animations, and even other interactive content — essentially, anything that can be created with Unity will be able to use the Tilt Brush Toolkit integrations. Google has provided a list of ideas and details on how that will work with Unity in a helpful guide here , for developers looking to get started on new VR creations....
